Iranian Cleric Gays GayRights Advocates are Lower than Animals

Ayatollah Abdollah Javadi-Amoli, a Muslim scholar in Iran's holy city Qom, has recently declared that not only are gay people lower than dogs and pigs, but so are people who defend the right of gay people to be treated like equal human beings. The preferred treatment for such people is death.

And that's what helps make Islam a religion of peace, right?

"If a society commits a new sin, it will face a new punishment," he said while interpreting Qur'anic verses about prophet Lot whose tribe Isalmic scholars say was punished by God for sodomy. "Problems like Aids did not exist before."

Citing the Qur'an, Javadi-Amoli said politicians who pass laws in favour of homosexuals are lower than animals. "Even animals ... dogs and pigs don't engage in this disgusting act x y but yet they [western politicians] pass laws in favour of them in their parliaments."

In reality, homosexuality has been observed in pretty much all other animals that have been studied. But expecting a religious "scholar" like Ayatollah Abdollah Javadi-Amoli to form conclusion based on reality -- or to care whether he's telling the truth about reality -- is probably far too much to ask. He doesn't live in the reality-based community.

In Iran, homosexuality is punishable by death -- but under the recently "liberalized" laws, it's only death for those who play a "passive" role. Those play an "active" role in acts of (consensual) sodomy and who are married are merely given 100 lashes. Maybe that's supposed to be evidence of the peaceful nature of Islam?
