There are a lot of people who think that atheists are too vocal -- that if atheists would simple be quiet about their atheism and their disagreements with religion, then they wouldn't be discriminated against.
That position is utter nonsense, of course. Atheists weren't beloved by America's Christians twenty or thirty years ago. If anything, the increased publicity about atheists and atheism has lowered the overall intolerance and prejudice.
Ron writes:
Can I announce that I am an atheist and I am running for president and have any hope of being nominated? If the answer is no then there is work to do.

What do you suppose it will take for a person's atheism to be irrelevant in politics -- for Christians in America to not care about whether a person is an atheist or a theist? Frankly, I'm not sure it's possible. American Christians have enough trouble overlooking a person being Jewish or Mormon.
