The difference between implicit atheism and explicit atheism lies in the reasons why a person is an atheist. The terms implicit atheism and explicit atheism were created by George H. Smith to distinguish those whose atheism is based on unfamiliarity with theism or just a general lack of engagement with theism and those who have seriously considered the claims of theism and then decided that those claims are unworthy of acceptance.
