Mailbag Nothing To Look Forward To Part 2

From: "CHADDIE"
Subject: Question for all Atheists/Agnostics
I enjoy a good laugh whenever someone tries to disprove the Bible (thanks to you crazy Atheists/Agnostics). First off, there has not been any proof, scientific, physical, or whatever, that disproves the Bible. And whenever we disprove your error theories, all I see is ridicule. Well ya know what? I think I have seen every single so-called error that you can think of, that has been posted on here. I mean really. I just have to laugh because theses errors you keep coming up with are just silly. They've been disproven, find something new to stretch our knowledge. You do realize of course that the more "contradictions" you pose, our faith gets stronger and our knowledge gets stronger.

Whether or not there has been anything that "disproves" the Bible depends upon what we mean by "disproves" - it's a very ambiguous statement. Has it been demonstrated that nothing in the Bible is even remotely true or accurate? Of course not - there is information in the Bible which accurately informs us about certain events in history and there are ideas in the Bible which are worth following.

That does not mean, however, that we can treat the Bible as if it were "true" in absolutely every respect and every detail. There are contradictions in the Bible. There are inaccurate statements in the Bible. There are errors - a fact which isn't a problem for many Christians, but does pose a problem for those who think that unless the Bible is perfectly free from error in every way then it doesn't have any value. That, I'm afraid, is a rather narrow and even immature approach to the text.

I have hope in the Lord. I believe in Him because I know that is the only way. I know that someday, I will be in paradise (Heaven) with God. That is what I hope for, and that is what I beleive. I know someday that all my worldly stuff is going to burn. I live for investing my life in Godly things. I live on this planet becuase I can say without a shadow of a doubt that Jesus Christ died for my sins. I know that God loves me. I don't know why, but He does. And that is why He created us...because He wanted something to love. That is why He sacrificed Jesus Christ. That's how much He loves us. I am not trying to sway anyones belief here. I really see too much of that. Just a bunch of accusations flying around. Why not try and understand where each other comes from and why not try to find out why we beleive in God instead of trying to prove us wrong. And why don't we as Christians find out why people do not believe in God. What has turned them off from Him?

What we have here is a pretty standard statement of Christian belief and doctrine - including all of the portions that are highly objectionable. First is the focus upon an afterlife at the expense of really participating in this life. You miss a lot when this life has no meaning beyond the attempt to please a god and thereby gain admission to Heaven.

Then there is the assertion that God created us because he wanted something to love. Now, isn't that a rather selfish reason? Then that's also supposed to be the reason why he "sacrificed Jesus Christ" - a pretty horrible image, to be quite honest. The "love" of this god doesn't sound very appealing at all. It's certainly not something I would appreciate in another human being, that's for sure.

Finally, the author acts as though people are "turned off" of God, but that assumes that people believe in God but simply don't want to have anything to do with him. People aren't "turned off" of God; rather, they are "turned off" of theism, finding that there simply aren't any good reasons to bother believing in gods. Without any good reason for belief, atheism is the only rational option available.
